U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to push as early as this fall to hold a summit with North Korea Chairperson Kim Jong-un.
On the 18th (local time), the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that President Trump asked his aides for this. According to U.S. officials, President Trump privately discussed a plan to pursue a face-to-face meeting with the Chairperson.
In particular, it was reported that a plan to meet the Chairperson during an Asia tour to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders' meeting in Shenzhen, China, in November is under discussion. However, formal preparations for a summit have not yet begun.
President Trump is said to intend to restart the stalled North Korea–U.S. dialogue through a summit with the Chairperson. Earlier, during last year's Asia tour, President Trump also sought a meeting with the Chairperson. At the time, North Korea sent positive signals for a meeting behind the scenes. But U.S. officials said the meeting did not come together because of the tight schedule.
