As Russian attacks targeting Ukrainian city centers continue, the number of Ukrainian civilian casualties is rising quickly.
According to AFP on the 13th, the United Nations (UN) human rights monitoring mission said, "At least 437 civilians were killed and 2,610 were injured in Ukraine in July." It added, "By deaths alone, this is the highest since May 2022."
Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, a total of 16,874 Ukrainian civilians have been counted as killed.
In response to Russia's concentrated attacks on Ukraine's energy facilities, Russia has focused fire on rear city centers, including the capital, Kyiv. Russian authorities deny allegations of attacks on civilians, saying they targeted infrastructure near urban areas.
Two civilians were killed in a Russian attack in Ukraine's Odesa region that day. Ukrainian authorities said that, in addition to the Odesa region that day, 11 other regions came under Russian attack.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on social media (SNS), "Russian forces destroyed a passenger train carrying 340 people with a jet-propelled drone," adding, "The person piloting the drone could not have failed to know it was a civilian train."
