U.S. President Donald Trump signaled he will not sit by as China overtakes the United States in cryptocurrencies and artificial intelligence (AI).
In an interview published on the 7th by Punchbowl News, a U.S. politics outlet, Trump said, "I don't want to see China dominate the world of cryptocurrencies."
Trump said, "Cryptocurrencies are a very important issue," adding, "We cannot allow China or Japan to dominate this field."
On the AI hegemony race, Trump defined it as a core national project. He said he would also put AI and data center issues on the agenda in talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who will visit the United States next month.
"In the AI race, the winner takes all," Trump said. "AI is several times bigger than the internet revolution and will have a greater impact than any technology to date."
He added, "When President Xi visits the United States in a few weeks, I will discuss AI," and, "We cannot allow China to surpass us in AI."
He also criticized the U.S. Congress for its conservative stance on technology regulation. Trump stressed, "Congress is trying to regulate the AI industry and drive corporations into crisis."
On energy price increases stemming from a U.S.-Iran war, he projected the chance of further gains is not high because negotiations are underway.
Trump said, "If attacks against Iran occur again, energy prices will rise, but if not, prices are expected to fall," adding, "Iran wants an agreement with us, so an agreement is in progress."
