In Nonthaburi province on the northwestern outskirts of Bangkok, Thailand, on the 7th (local time), a middle school student shot and killed at least seven people.
According to Thai police, a 14-year-old middle school student attending Debsirin Nonthaburi School, known as an elite school in Nonthaburi province, killed the student's grandfather and grandmother at the student's home with the grandfather's handgun.
The student then went to the school several kilometers away and opened fire. Police told AP and AFP that five faculty and staff members were killed and 23 people were injured.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who made an emergency visit to the school after the incident, said nine of the injured were in critical condition, raising the possibility that the death toll could climb.
The suspect fired at least 26 rounds at the school, and 26 shell casings and 34 unfired rounds were found at the scene.
After firing indiscriminately, the suspect reportedly set up a barricade on the third floor of a building on campus, staged a standoff to block police from entering, and then took the suspect's own life.
Photos and videos posted by local media and on social media showed the suspect wearing a purple uniform and a black crossbody bag, and during the shooting, students running from classrooms, hiding under desks, and crawling out to a narrow ledge outside the building through windows.
Pawarisa Meilisa, a 12th-grade student, told AFP, "The gunshots were very loud, as if the suspect was right above us," adding, "We could even hear bullets embedding in the floor."
