Foreign media reported that Marco Rubio, U.S. secretary of state, and Wang Yi, China's foreign minister (director of the Communist Party's Central Foreign Affairs Commission), will hold talks on the 22nd local time in Manila, the Philippines.
The previous day, Reuters, citing a U.S. State Department official, said Minister Rubio and Director General Wang are scheduled to meet in Manila that day.
The top diplomats of the United States and China are visiting Manila to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) foreign ministers' meeting.
The meeting is expected to focus on preparing for a summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in September.
Earlier, President Trump said Xi would visit the United States on Sept. 24, but China has not yet officially confirmed Xi's visit.
Before the ASEAN meeting, Minister Rubio told reporters, "There is no reason to think they won't come," signaling that Xi's visit to the United States is proceeding as scheduled.
President Trump and Xi held a summit in Beijing, China, in May. But they still remain apart on sensitive issues such as Taiwan.
In particular, Trump recently raised allegations that China interfered in the 2020 U.S. election. China has denied the allegations.
Trump told reporters at the White House that day, "We will discuss this issue (election interference allegations) with China."
