On the 21st (local time), the New York stock market opened higher, helped by a rebound in semiconductor and artificial intelligence (AI) stocks.
As of 10:01 a.m. that day on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 177.71 points, or 0.34%, at 52,016.97. The Standard & Poor's (S&P) 500 was up 36.38 points, or 0.49%, at 7,479.66, and the Nasdaq composite was up 182.20 points, or 0.71%, at 25,690.27 in transaction.
The market strengthened as bargain hunting flowed into semiconductor shares. Micron Technology rose 8.18%, and Intel gained 5.86%. Nvidia added 2%, and Marvell Technology climbed 5.53%. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index also rose 3.66%.
Investors are watching earnings from Alphabet and Intel scheduled for this week. It is seen as reflecting expectations that if major tech companies maintain capital spending plans for AI data centers and semiconductors, recently weakened AI investment sentiment could recover.
However, uncertainty over U.S. tariff policy limited the market's gains. Some foreign media reported that the Donald Trump administration, after imposing a 50% tariff on certain Canadian products, is preparing additional tariffs targeting other countries.
Instability in the Middle East and rising international oil prices were also cited as headwinds. As tensions between the United States and Iran continued and Yemen's Houthi rebels threatened ships using Saudi Arabian ports, Brent crude topped $90 a barrel.
