Iran said on the 19th (local time) that it struck the site of the Darkhovin nuclear power plant under construction by U.S. forces.
According to Reuters and others, the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) said the United States attacked the Darkhovin nuclear power plant with several projectiles.
The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran criticized the "U.S. regime, a terrorist and criminal whose essence is plunder and illegality, for committing aggressive and barbaric acts in violation of international law."
The Darkhovin nuclear power plant in Khuzestan Province in southwestern Iran began foundational work in Dec. 2022. However, as of March this year, full-scale construction was not underway, according to reports.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) assessed that Darkhovin is in the early stage of construction and, because no nuclear material was stored during its last visit, there is not expected to be a radiological risk.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, however, emphasized that "military action against any nuclear-related facility must be avoided."
The IAEA said that after reports of the attack it contacted Iran and plans to disclose additional information as soon as it is obtained.
