A leather jacket worn by Nvidia Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang sold at auction for more than 1.4 billion won.
On the 17th (local time), CNBC and other outlets said a black leather jacket worn and signed by Huang was sold at a Sotheby's auction for $960,000 (about 1.43 billion won).
The hammer price far exceeded Sotheby's estimate of $40,000 to $60,000, about 16 times the upper end. The leather jackets Huang mainly wears are Tom Ford products and are known to cost between 5 million and 15 million won.
The jacket at auction was the one Huang wore at a Foxconn event held in Taipei, Taiwan, in 2023. Huang has worn leather jackets at major events, making them his trademark.
The auction revenue will be used for fellowships and research support programs at the Edge Institute, a nonprofit in the innovation field. CNBC called it "a sign that collectors want to own artifacts related to the artificial intelligence (AI) boom."
