The Ukraine government said on the 19th (local time) that Russia carried out the largest single ballistic missile attack since the war began.
According to Reuters and others, Kyiv, Ukraine, and nearby areas came under Russian attack overnight, leaving at least one person dead and 13 injured. Fires broke out in five districts in central Kyiv, and apartments and a supermarket were damaged.
The Ukraine Air Force said Russia launched 41 missiles overnight and that 18 were shot down. It said 125 Russian drones were launched and 108 were intercepted. The missiles and drones mainly targeted Kyiv.
After Ukraine struck a logistics warehouse on the outskirts of Moscow the previous day, Russia appeared to retaliate. Russia said seven night-shift workers were killed and 25 were injured in the Ukrainian attack.
The Russian military has intensified ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv and other cities as Ukraine's air defense weapons systems have become depleted.
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky said, "Ballistic missile defense is currently our top priority and an unwavering task," adding, "Interceptor missiles are needed every day."
