Cuba, which is suffering an energy shortage due to the U.S. oil embargo, was hit by another massive blackout on the 10th (local time). It came four days after a major outage on the 6th.
The state-run electricity company (UNE) said on X that "a complete shutdown of the national power system has occurred" and that "protocols are being activated to begin the restoration process."
This is the fourth blackout this year. Large-scale outages also occurred in March and May.
Despite U.S. sanctions, Cuba had barely held on thanks to crude oil supplies from its ally Venezuela, but the situation has worsened recently. U.S. President Donald Trump, through executive orders on Jan. 29 and May 1, designated Cuba as a national security threat. Trump also threatened to impose a "tariff bomb" on countries that provide oil to Cuba. This has raised concerns that, after the war with Iran, Cuba could become the next target of U.S. attacks.
