U.S. President Donald Trump said he does not think war with Iran will start again.
Trump said this at a news conference in Türkiye on the 8th (local time), where a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit was held.
Trump repeatedly noted that night that he was considering striking Iran. He said an attack on Iran would proceed quickly, but he did not think it would be carried out over a long period or that war with Iran would start again.
Trump added, "I thought Iran's new leadership was rational, but judging from their actions over the past one to two weeks, they are not." He said, "I'm not sure I want to make a deal (with Iran). Let's just finish the job." This is interpreted to mean that an end-of-war negotiation could fall through.
On the 6th and 7th, Iran attacked a civilian oil tanker transiting the Strait of Hormuz. In response, on the 7th, the United States Central Command, which oversees U.S. forces in the Middle East, said on social media X that it carried out airstrikes on more than 80 targets in Iran.
As U.S. airstrikes continue, some speculate that end-of-war talks between the United States and Iran could face setbacks. The two sides have been holding follow-up talks after signing an end-of-war memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the 17th of last month.
Earlier that day, Trump said in a meeting with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, "We carried out a strong strike on Iran last night, and we will probably strike strongly again tonight."
