U.S. President Donald Trump on the 8th (local time) declared that the provisional truce agreement with Iran had effectively ended and said there was no longer any intention to negotiate with Iran.
According to Reuters, Trump met with reporters ahead of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit in Ankara, the capital of Türkiye, and said, "I think the memorandum is over. I don't want to deal with them."
Then, alongside NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, he said, "They are trash. They are sick people. Sick people are leading them," and criticized, "As I see it, dealing with them is just a waste of time."
The United States and Iran last month signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) brokered by Pakistan and launched 60 days of talks to craft a permanent peace agreement. But recent indirect talks in Qatar ended with no significant progress, and U.S. forces carried out additional airstrikes against Iran the day before. On this, Trump said, "We (the United States) told Iran's leaders to 'just hold (Khamenei's) funeral,' but instead they fired missiles at an oil tanker. So the United States hit Iran hard last night," explaining the reason.
The United States also revoked the general license that had allowed sales of Iranian crude oil, prompted by an attack with projectiles on three oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz the same day.
Earlier, the U.S. Treasury Department, under the memorandum, had issued a general license allowing the sale of Iranian crude oil and petrochemical and petroleum products through Aug. 21, but it revoked it and required the Iranian side to end the related transaction by July 17.
