The U.S. State Department said on the 2nd (local time) that Minister Marco Rubio spoke with Director General Wang Yi of China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and discussed a constructive, strategically stable relationship based on fairness and reciprocity.
Spokesperson Tommy Pigott released a statement that day disclosing the recent call between Minister Rubio and Director General Wang, and said, "Minister Rubio discussed the importance of building a strategically stable relationship based on the principles of fairness and reciprocity put forward by President Donald Trump."
A day after China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs first revealed on the 30th of last month that the two top diplomats had spoken, the U.S. State Department officially confirmed it the following day.
According to China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Director General Wang, in this call, stressed expanding bilateral cooperation to build a "constructive, strategically stable relationship," in line with the agreement from the U.S.-China summit in May.
On Taiwan, he urged, "We hope the United States will handle Taiwan-related affairs prudently and with utmost prudence."
However, differences emerged between the two countries over the Taiwan issue. Both mentioned a "constructive, strategically stable relationship," but the United States emphasized fairness and reciprocity without raising Taiwan. China, by contrast, repeatedly brought up Taiwan and called for a cautious U.S. response.
