Authorities said that "personal reasons were the cause" in connection with the recent collision of a light aircraft with a skyscraper in downtown Beijing.
Beijing's Chaoyang District announced the findings on its official social media on the 2nd, saying the light aircraft pilot who died after crashing into CITIC Tower (China Zun) near East 3rd Ring in Chaoyang District at 5:55 p.m. on the 26th (local time) was a 66-year-old Beijing native surnamed Liu.
According to the announcement, Liu had suffered from prolonged insomnia and anxiety and had written "I will end my life" multiple times in a diary. On the day of the incident, Liu was flying out of an airport in Beijing's Pinggu District when the aircraft left the designated area and lost contact with the airport. The light aircraft later collided with the building, and Liu died at the scene. Thirteen people at the site were also injured; the injuries were not life-threatening, and one person has been discharged.
Authorities said, "This incident endangered public safety due to personal reasons."
