North Korean State Affairs Commission Chairperson Kim Jong-un and Chinese President Xi Jinping discussed strengthening strategic cooperation and expanding exchanges at a summit in Pyongyang on the 8th. Xi assessed the outcome of the talks, saying, "We have reached important agreements."
Chairperson Kim and President Xi held talks at the Kumsusan State Guesthouse in Pyongyang on the afternoon of the same day and discussed strengthening high-level exchanges, expanding economic cooperation, carrying on traditions and revitalizing people-to-people exchanges, and bolstering strategic coordination to safeguard sovereignty and security.
According to China's state-run Xinhua News Agency, Xi said, "We should strengthen exchanges in diplomacy, law enforcement, and the military; faithfully implement the important agreements with Chairperson Kim; and pool wisdom and strength for the development of China–North Korea relations."
He went on, "We want to strengthen the alignment of development strategies and expand practical cooperation in trade, agriculture, construction, science and technology, and health care to bring greater benefits to the peoples of both countries."
He then proposed, "Taking the full reopening of border ports of trade and the resumption of civilian flights and international passenger train operations as an opportunity, we should expand people-to-people exchanges and realize two-way exchanges."
Xi also proposed maintaining and managing memorial facilities for the martyrs of the Chinese People's Volunteers in North Korea, jointly carrying out education on revolutionary traditions and ideological education for youth, and strengthening strategic coordination and cooperation to maintain regional peace.
Xi said, "The China–North Korea friendship is rooted in the shared ideals, beliefs, and goals of struggle of both sides," adding, "Support for Comrade General Secretary Kim Jong-un's leadership of North Korea's socialist cause will not change."
Chairperson Kim said, "Consolidating and developing China–North Korea friendship in the new era is the choice of the people and the demand of the times," adding, "We will make the development of China–North Korea relations our No. 1 strategic task and do our utmost."
He added, "Going forward, Joseon will continue to uphold the one-China principle and firmly support the policies and positions China adopts to safeguard its core interests."
After the talks, at a banquet, Xi said, "Marking the 65th anniversary of the North Korea–China Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance this year, North Korea–China relations stand at a new historical starting point," adding, "On this visit, I reached important agreements with Chairperson Kim."
Chairperson Kim also said, "Together with President Xi, we reached important agreements on advancing North Korea–China relations with new implications for the new era in line with changing circumstances," adding, "We also exchanged broad views on common international and regional issues."
