U.S. President Donald Trump on the 25th (local time) signaled he would not make a deal with Iran at all unless the agreement is great and meaningful.
President Trump said accordingly on Truth Social, "I laugh when I think about the Dumocrats who know nothing about the Iran deal I am pursuing, the RINO, and the fools."
He went on, "The agreement with Iran will be a great and meaningful deal, or there will be no deal at all," adding, "That deal will be the exact opposite of the disaster called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) negotiated by the Obama administration (my predecessor)."
President Trump continued, "The JCPOA is a deal that opened a direct and public path for Iran to have nuclear weapons," adding, "I do not make deals like that."
The Obama administration in 2015 signed the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action), under which Iran restricted uranium enrichment and accepted inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to control its nuclear program, while the West eased economic sanctions against Iran.
However, in 2018 during his first term, President Trump unilaterally scrapped the JCPOA, saying "the deal does not completely block Iran's development of nuclear weapons." The United States then resumed sanctions on Iran, and Iran raised its level of uranium enrichment again, intensifying tensions between the two sides.
The Trump administration and Iran are reportedly seriously considering signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that specifies a 60-day truce extension, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, allowing Iran's free sale of oil, and additional talks to limit Iran's nuclear program.
However, Esmail Baghaei, Spokesperson for Iran's Foreign Ministry, said, "It is true that we have reached agreement on a significant part of the agenda (with the United States)," while noting that the timing of a signature remains uncertain. He added that they did not discuss end-of-war consultations, the nuclear issue, or the opening of the Strait of Hormuz.
