U.S. President Donald Trump said he would deploy 5,000 additional U.S. troops to Poland.
Trump said on the 21st (local time) on his social media Truth Social that "the United States will send an additional 5,000 troops to Poland." Trump also mentioned his close relationship with Poland's President Karol Nawrocki, whom he supports.
But it is unclear what this remark means. Earlier, the United States pushed to deploy 4,000 additional U.S. troops to Poland, but there were reports recently that the move was delayed or canceled. There has also been talk of reducing some U.S. forces stationed in Germany and moving them to Poland.
U.S. Vice President JD Vance said at a briefing on the 19th that "it is not a reduction in forces but a delay in the normal rotational deployment schedule," adding, "where those forces will be deployed has not yet been finally decided."
Trump has criticized European countries that have been reluctant to support the United States over the Iran issue, but has maintained friendly ties with Poland. On the 5th, he also said of the possibility of reducing U.S. forces stationed in Germany and redeploying them to Poland, "Poland would want it," adding, "we have a very good relationship with Poland."
President Nawrocki has also publicly asked that U.S. forces leaving Germany be sent to Poland.
Poland currently has about 500 U.S. troops permanently stationed there, and about 10,000 U.S. troops on rotational deployments.
