Foreign media reported that U.S. forces carried out an airstrike on a southern Iranian port on the 7th (local time), rekindling tensions between the United States and Iran.
Reuters, citing a Fox News reporter's social media post, reported that "a senior U.S. official confirmed the U.S. military's airstrike." The targets were reported to be Bandar Abbas in southern Iran and Qeshm Island near the Strait of Hormuz.
Earlier, the semi-official Mehr news agency said explosions were heard in Bandar Abbas and nearby waters, and, citing local sources, reported that "two drones were shot down."
Iran's state-run IRIB also claimed that "the U.S. military attacked an Iranian oil tanker, and in response Iran fired missiles, causing enemy forces in the Strait of Hormuz to suffer damage and retreat." It was not confirmed whether any U.S. Navy ships were actually hit.
The mood between the two countries reversed in just one day. The previous day, major foreign outlets reported in unison that the United States and Iran were close to signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) containing an end-of-war agreement, and U.S. President Donald Trump also said a deal was highly likely. However, with reports of airstrikes, drone shootdowns and missile responses following one after another, military tensions around the Strait of Hormuz are again rising.
