Pope Leo XIV on the 21st (local time) commemorated the first anniversary of the death of his predecessor, Pope Francis.
Local news agency ANSA said the pope posted on social media that "the words and actions of Pope Francis are still etched in our hearts."
The pope said, "We will always proclaim God's mercy and strengthen fraternity among all men and women, and carry on his legacy."
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also posted a tribute on social media that day. Meloni said, "Pope Francis consistently reminded us of the value of peace, concern for the most vulnerable, and responsibility toward others," adding, "His message, which left a deep mark on our time, will be eternal."
Pope Francis died on the 21st last year from a stroke and heart failure. He was regarded as the most progressive pope in history, allowing Catholic priests to bless same-sex couples, among other steps.
