U.S. President Donald Trump said on the 16th (local time) that Israel and Lebanon agreed to a 10-day cease-fire.
Trump said on Truth Social, "I had an excellent conversation with Lebanon President Joseph Aoun and Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu," adding, "The leaders of both countries agreed to formally enter a 10-day cease-fire starting at 5 p.m. Eastern Time to achieve peace between the two nations."
Combat will cease starting at 6 a.m. on the 17th Korea time.
Trump said, "On Tuesday, the two countries met in Washington, D.C., for the first time in 34 years with Secretary of State Marco Rubio," calling it "an important step toward a sustainable peace between the two countries."
He added, "I directed Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Rubio to work with Dan Caine, the chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), to achieve lasting peace with Israel and Lebanon."
He said, "It has been a great honor for me to resolve nine wars around the world, and this will be my 10th case," adding, "Let's finish it now."
Israel continued its attacks on Lebanon, saying it would defeat Hezbollah, a pro-Iran armed faction, even after the United States and Iran agreed on the 7th to a two-week cease-fire. Iran has protested that this violates the cease-fire agreement.
Accordingly, with the U.S.-Iran cease-fire set to end on the 21st, attention is on whether this cease-fire agreement could positively affect talks to end the war.
However, the cease-fire agreement announced that day was made with the regular armies of Israel and Lebanon. Israel is currently engaged in fighting with Hezbollah, an armed faction in Lebanon. For an actual cease-fire to hold, Hezbollah's consent will likely be required.
Israel and Lebanon have effectively remained in a state of war for 78 years since Israel's founding in 1948.
