With the deadline set by U.S. President Donald Trump for talks with Iran just half a day away, China voiced concern about a prolonged war and urged both sides to push for peace negotiations.
Mao Ning, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a briefing on the 7th in response to related questions, "The protracted Iran war has caused significant casualties and losses, threatens regional and national security, and is affecting the global economy and energy security."
Earlier, President Trump set the deadline for Iran to agree to steps including reopening the Strait of Hormuz at 8 p.m. Eastern time (9 a.m. Korea time on the 8th), pressuring that if Iran does not accept U.S. demands, "we can wipe out the entire country overnight." However, there is also talk that if Iran does not comply, President Trump could once again extend the deadline.
Spokesperson Mao said, "China is deeply concerned and worried about this," adding, "A prolonged war and escalating clashes serve neither side's interests." He then urged all parties to play a constructive role in advancing peace talks to ease tensions.
Asked by reporters how China views the situation in the Iran war, he said, "Since the outbreak of the war, China has consistently maintained an objective, fair, and balanced position and has played a role in promoting peace." According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a total of 26 calls with Iran, Israel, and Russia, among others, and dispatched special envoys to mediate the war.
Spokesperson Mao said, "The root cause of the Iran war lies in the United States and Israel violating international law and launching military attacks against Iran, and the top priority is to immediately achieve a cease-fire and, through dialogue and negotiations, restore peace and stability in the Gulf region," adding, "All parties should show goodwill and bring a swift end to this war, which should never have occurred."
