Randy George, the Army chief of staff, has reportedly decided to resign at the request of U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
According to the Associated Press and others on the 2nd (local time), Minister of the Ministry of National Defense (War Department) Pete Hegseth demanded the resignation and immediate retirement of Army Chief of Staff Randy George, prompting George to step down. A Spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense was said to have noted that George's resignation would take effect immediately.
George, who previously served in Iraq and Afghanistan, was appointed to his current post after Senate confirmation in 2023 during the previous Joe Biden administration. Because the Army chief of staff's term is typically four years, he had been expected to remain in the position until next year.
It is not clear why Hegseth is pressing to remove George at a time when the war with Iran is in full swing. However, questions have been raised over whether it was influenced by a recent controversy after a video was released showing a military Apache helicopter performing a "hover" in front of the home of Kid Rock, a pro-Trump singer.
After the Army investigated two helicopters that flew at low altitude over Kid Rock's home and suspended the pilots from duty, Hegseth fully voided the move within hours, raising suspicions.
