At 8 p.m. on the 2nd, Korea time, a deputy minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will attend a meeting of foreign ministers from 35 countries chaired by the United Kingdom to discuss plans to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
On this day, Park Il, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said this at a regular briefing, adding, "The government will continue to take part in related international discussions, including today's meeting," and "We will carefully review international trends in the discussion and Korea's contributions."
The meeting will be attended by the 35 countries that joined the statement condemning the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, and from Korea, Deputy Minister Jeong Ui-hye of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will participate via video.
The participating countries are expected to discuss ways for the international community to contribute on the premise that armed clashes in the Middle East stop or ease, but with uncertainty over the situation in the Middle East still high, concrete measures are unlikely to emerge.
Regarding former U.S. President Donald Trump pointing to Korea and criticizing it for not responding immediately to a troop dispatch request, Park, the Spokesperson, said, "We are paying attention to President Trump's remarks," adding, "We will make a decision after careful review under close communication."
On negotiations with Iran at the bilateral level over the passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, the ministry said, "Diplomatic communication channels are open," but added, "We will respond carefully, given the fluidity of the situation."
