Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a congratulatory message to North Korean State Affairs Commission Chairperson Kim Jong-un on his reappointment.
The Kremlin said on the 23rd (local time) that, in a message in Putin's name to Chairperson Kim, it conveyed, "We sincerely congratulate Comrade Kim Jong-un on being reappointed as Chairperson of the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea."
According to the Korean Central News Agency, the Supreme People's Assembly of North Korea held a session on the 22nd and reappointed Chairperson Kim. The Supreme People's Assembly serves as North Korea's parliament.
Putin said, "We highly appreciate your contribution to strengthening the friendly allied relations between the two countries," adding, "This decision shows that unanimous public support has emerged for the policy to effectively resolve the socio-economic challenges facing the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and to defend its sovereignty and legitimate interests on the international stage."
He also emphasized, "We will work closely to further develop the comprehensive strategic partnership between Moscow and Pyongyang," adding, "This is, without a doubt, in the fundamental interests of the peoples of both countries."
Along with the congratulations on Chairperson Kim's reappointment, Russia again invited him to visit. In June 2024 in Pyongyang, President Putin met with Chairperson Kim for talks and invited him to Russia.
Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov also said at a briefing, "Russia always welcomes the leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea," adding, "The visit will take place once the schedule is agreed."
