U.S. President Donald Trump said he asked the Chinese side to postpone a U.S.-China summit.
According to the Associated Press on the 16th local time, Trump said in the Oval Office that he asked the Chinese side to postpone his visit "by about a month."
He said, "We are talking to China," adding, "I also plan to visit China, but I think I need to be here right now." However, he did not mention specifics such as whether a new schedule had been set following the postponement request.
Trump had planned to visit China from the 31st of this month to the 2nd of next month to hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Earlier the same day, Reuters also reported, citing the White House, that the two leaders' meeting could be postponed.
The Associated Press assessed that "given the two countries remain tense over tariff and other issues, if Trump cancels a face-to-face meeting with President Xi, that alone could trigger significant economic repercussions."
