Reports said thousands of Kurdish fighters crossed from Iraq into Iran and launched a ground assault.
According to Fox News on the 4th (local time), Iranian Kurds who have lived in Iraq for years are reportedly heading to northwestern Iran for ground combat.
The Kurds are an Iranian mountain people dispersed across Türkiye, Iran and Iraq, and they are attempting to establish a nation-state.
Earlier that day, U.S. Minister of the Ministry of National Defense Pete Hegseth said U.S. forces are not supplying weapons to insurgent groups in Iran but suggested other U.S. government agencies may be involved.
White House Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt also acknowledged that President Trump had contacted the Kurds but denied reports that the administration had decided to provide weapons to Kurdish forces.
Israel has officially acknowledged supporting Kurdish militias. An Israeli government official said, "We are supporting Kurdish militias operating in western Iran," and explained, "They will seize parts of Iran and spur a broader uprising."
However, confusion is mounting as numerous sources present information that contradicts Fox News' report that Iraqi Kurdish fighters have crossed into Iran to wage ground combat.
On the day, the deputy chief secretary of the Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq said, "Not a single Iraqi Kurd has crossed the border."
