Turkey said on the 4th (local time) that a missile launched from Iran and heading toward Turkey was shot down.
The Ministry of National Defense said in a statement that "a ballistic missile that was heading for Turkish airspace via the airspace of Iraq and Syria was swiftly shot down and neutralized by North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) air and air defense systems deployed in the eastern Mediterranean."
It added that debris from the interceptor missile fell in the Dortyol area of Hatay province in southern Turkey.
The Ministry of National Defense also said, "There were no casualties."
It also warned, "We will take all necessary measures firmly and without hesitation to protect our territory and airspace," adding, "We have the right to respond to any hostile act."
There is also speculation that the Iranian missile launched that day may have targeted the Incirlik Air Base in southern Turkey, where U.S. forces are stationed.
Iran has been attacking U.S. military bases in neighboring Middle Eastern countries in response to U.S. and Israeli attacks on its territory that began on the 28th of last month.
However, Iran has so far refrained from military action against Turkey, a NATO member state.
