United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres urged the United States and Israel to resume talks over airstrikes on Iran.
According to the Associated Press and Reuters, Guterres attended an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council on the 28th (local time) and said there is a risk of an uncontrollable chain reaction due to military operations.
He condemned at the same time the U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran, as well as Iran's subsequent attacks on neighboring countries including Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Guterres said everything must be done to prevent the situation from worsening, warning that otherwise a larger conflict would erupt that would have enormous consequences for civilians and regional stability.
He also called on the United States, Israel, and Iran to immediately resume negotiations so that this region (the Middle East) and the world can step back from the brink.
The emergency meeting was convened at the request of five countries: France, Russia, China, Colombia, and Bahrain. Separately, France, the United Kingdom, and Germany issued a joint statement the same day urging the resumption of U.S.-Iran nuclear talks. The three countries strongly condemned Iran's airstrikes on Middle Eastern neighbors and stressed that Iran's leadership must find a solution through negotiations.
