On the 28th (local time), U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran were reported to have targeted Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Israel's public broadcaster Kan cited sources the same day as saying, "The targets of the attack included Supreme Leader Khamenei and President Pezeshkian."
CNN also cited Israeli sources in reporting that the strikes were an operation aimed at senior Iranian figures including Khamenei, Armed Forces Chief of Staff Abdolrahim Mousavi, and President Masoud Pezeshkian.
According to media reports and witness accounts, missiles landed near the offices of Khamenei and President Pezeshkian, and smoke was seen after a large explosion nearby.
According to RIA Novosti, Iranian Vice President Mohammad Jafar Qaempanah said on X (formerly Twitter), "Despite the cowardly attack by the Zionist (Israeli) regime and the United States, Pezeshkian is completely unharmed."
Khamenei likewise was not in Tehran and was said to have taken shelter in a secure location. Khamenei has not appeared in public for days as military tensions with the United States have recently escalated.
