Iran immediately launched a missile counterattack in response to U.S. and Israeli military action against Iran.
According to Reuters and CNN, Israeli military authorities said on the 28th (local time) that Iran fired several missiles toward Israel. They also said the defense system is operating to shoot them down.
On this day, Israeli mobile phone users received alerts saying Iran's missile launches had been detected and they should evacuate to protected areas. The military authorities emphasized, "Because the defense system is not perfect, the public must continue to follow the guidelines of the Home Front Command (Israel's civilian protection unit)."
Authorities later said Iran additionally concentrated missile launches. The missile launches are retaliation for the U.S. and Israel's surprise attacks that day on Tehran and other parts of Iran.
Israel Katz, Israel's defense minister, said they carried out a preemptive strike to remove Iran's threat to the country. U.S. President Donald Trump also said the official objective of the operation is "to protect Americans by eliminating the Iranian regime's imminent threat."
President Trump claimed Iran attempted to rebuild its nuclear program and is developing long-range missiles that threaten the United States and its allies.
Immediately after the attack, Israeli military authorities sounded preventive air-raid sirens across the country. They also banned all educational activities, gatherings, and workplace operations except for Israel's "essential institutional sectors."
