As the U.S. Ministry of National Defense and Anthropic, the developer of the artificial intelligence (AI) "Claude," clash over the scope of AI's military use, U.S. President Donald Trump on the 27th local time ordered all federal agencies to halt the use of Anthropic's technology.
Trump said on the social media (SNS) Truth Social, "The United States will not allow radical left 'woke' corporations to dictate how our military fights and wins wars."
He added, "Left-wing zealots made the deadly mistake of pressuring the Department of War to follow their terms of service instead of the Constitution," and "their selfishness put American lives at risk and jeopardized national security."
He went on, "I am ordering all U.S. federal government agencies to immediately cease using Anthropic's technology," adding, "We do not need it or want it, and we will never do a transaction with them again."
However, considering that some agencies, including the Ministry of National Defense, are using Anthropic products, he said the shutdown would be phased in over six months.
He said, "Anthropic would be well advised to cooperate during this period," adding, "If not, I will marshal the full authority of the presidency to ensure compliance, and serious civil and criminal consequences will follow."
Claude is currently known as virtually the only AI that can be used within classified U.S. military systems.
Earlier, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was reported to have demanded in a meeting with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei that policy be revised to allow the military to use Claude without restrictions. Anthropic, by contrast, has maintained that its models should not be used for mass surveillance of its own citizens or for developing fully autonomous weapons.
