Jiji Press reported on the 12th that the governments of Korea and Japan are coordinating Sanae Takaichi's visit to Korea in March.
Citing a government official, Jiji Press said the two governments are discussing a plan for Prime Minister Takaichi to visit Korea and hold talks with President Lee Jae-myung, timed to her trip to the United States next month to hold a summit with U.S. President Donald Trump on the 19th.
Jiji Press said that if Prime Minister Takaichi visits Korea, the venue being discussed is either Seoul or Andong, President Lee's hometown.
Earlier, on the 13th, President Lee visited Nara Prefecture, Prime Minister Takaichi's hometown, held a summit, and together toured Horyuji, a historic temple.
If Prime Minister Takaichi visits Korea as part of shuttle diplomacy, the two leaders are expected to affirm their policy of continuing the recent momentum in improving Japan-Korea relations.
However, if Japan's Diet convenes on the 18th, deliberations on the fiscal 2026 budget (April 2026–March 2027) may continue into March, so the two governments plan to keep coordinating in consideration of the Diet's schedule.
