U.S. President Donald Trump urged passage of the "SAVE (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility) Act," saying, "U.S. elections are rigged, stolen, and becoming a laughingstock around the world."
On the 8th (local time), President Trump wrote on Truth Social, "We will fix it (the election system). I am asking every Republican to fight," as he outlined the main points of the SAVE Act.
The SAVE Act would require that ▲ in every state, voters present proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote, ▲ present identification when voting, and ▲ ban mail-in voting except in limited cases such as illness, disability, military service, or travel. Driven by Republicans, it passed the House last year.
President Trump has argued that this would strengthen voter identification procedures and save the United States from election fraud. Some analysts have said turnout could fall among Democratic supporters who do not have voting rights or lack citizenship documents.
President Trump maintains that attempts at election fraud have continued and must be rooted out. Ahead of the midterm elections in Nov., he stirred controversy by calling for nationalization that would transfer election management responsibilities and authority—constitutionally under the jurisdiction of the State Governments—to the federal government.
