As U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed his intention to purchase Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark in the Arctic, and even hinted at possible military action while signaling a will to annex it, a proposal to solve the problem through a "marriage of convenience" is drawing attention among overseas netizens.
According to the well-known political satire account "Miss White" on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on the 16th, the account argued that the issue of Greenland could be resolved by arranging a marriage between Trump's youngest son Barron, 19, and Denmark's Princess Isabella, 18.
Through a post on the 8th, this account said, "A simple diplomatic solution would be for Barron Trump and Princess Isabella to get married, and for Greenland to be given to the United States as a dowry."
Barron is the youngest son of President Trump, a real estate tycoon, with his third wife, Melania. Princess Isabella is the eldest daughter of Denmark's King Frederik X and second in the line of succession.
Since 2019, President Trump has argued that the United States should annex Greenland for Arctic security and resource acquisition. Denmark, which holds Greenland as an autonomous territory, has said it is absolutely impossible and is at odds with Trump. Greenland holds abundant resources, including rare earths, oil, and iron ore.
Meanwhile, the post drew more than 7,100 comments. Some netizens reacted with amusement, saying, "Austria resolved disputes this way in the days of the Habsburgs," and "Modern problems require ancient solutions."
By contrast, one netizen criticized it, saying, "This reads like a medieval fan fiction. Greenland is not a bargaining chip, and Princess Isabella is not a chess piece. Barron is not a diplomatic tool," adding, "Exchanging countries through marriage is something from the 1400s."
