On the 27th (local time), heavy snow fell in the northeastern United States, leading to mass flight cancellations and delays across the region.
According to flight-tracking site FlightAware, a total of 6,596 flights within the United States and international flights to and from the United States were delayed as of 4 p.m. Eastern time. At the same time, 906 domestic and international flights were canceled.
Delays and cancellations were concentrated at the New York City area's three major airports: John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, and Newark International Airport. As a result, people who had planned long-distance air travel for the year-end holiday season experienced disruptions.
Roads also came to a halt. Although snowfall eased in the Northeast in the afternoon, overnight accumulation left road traffic across the region sluggish.
According to NBC, about 33 centimeters of snow fell in Phoenicia, a mountain town in New York state. New York City recorded about 11 centimeters in Central Park, the most in three years since 2022.
