Support for U.S. President Donald Trump's economic policy has fallen to a low of 36%.
According to a poll released on the 17th (local time) by PBS, NPR, and Marist, 57% of the 1,440 adults surveyed said they do not support President Trump's handling of the economy. The share who said he is handling the economy well was 36%, the lowest across both his first and second terms.
In particular, as support in the economic arena falls, his overall job approval appears to be under downward pressure. Seventy percent of respondents said "the cost of living in their area is very hard to afford or not affordable at all," the lowest since Marist began the survey in 2011.
The share who said the cost of living is affordable or very affordable was 30%, a sharp drop from the previous survey (55%).
Views were also negative on his performance in office itself. Among respondents, 38% said President Trump is doing a good job as president, while 54% said he is not doing a good job.
Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, said, "With the burden of living costs emerging as the top issue for voters, the responsibility ultimately comes back to the chief executive (the president)."
In fact, inflation had previously dragged down former President Joe Biden's approval as well. In early 2022, as prices soared to the sky, Biden's economic policy approval also fell to 36%.
