A report said U.S. and Russian delegations will meet this weekend in Miami, Florida, to discuss ways to end the war in Ukraine.
According to Politico on the 17th (local time), the U.S. delegation is expected to meet the Russian delegation this weekend and convey the results of recent discussions held with Ukraine and Europe.
Earlier, Russia and Ukraine failed to narrow their differences over issues including the partitioning of Ukrainian territory contained in the U.S. armistice proposal. In particular, President Vladimir Putin has continued to take a firm stance that he cannot back down on territorial issues.
Steve Witkoff, President Donald Trump's special envoy, and Jared Kushner, Trump's eldest son-in-law, are reportedly set to serve on the U.S. delegation, while Kirill Dmitriev, President Putin's special envoy, will represent the Russian side.
The U.S. delegation met President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine in Berlin, Germany, on the 14th–15th and discussed measures to guarantee Ukraine's security. The United States proposed providing collective defense at a level similar to that of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member countries, and Ukraine hinted it could forgo its demand to join NATO.
Russia has strongly opposed Ukraine's NATO membership and has argued as a condition for ending the war that the size of the Ukrainian military be reduced.
Meanwhile, separate from this delegation meeting, the United States plans to summon military officials from countries supporting Ukraine to the United States to further coordinate details on Ukraine's security.
