MacKenzie Scott, the former spouse of Amazon's founder and a novelist, donated more than 10 trillion won this year.
On the 9th (local time), the U.S. daily the New York Times (NYT) reported that Scott donated $7.2 billion (about 10.6 trillion won) this year alone. Her cumulative donations were tallied at $26 billion (about 38.3 trillion won).
The NYT said, "Given that Scott's total asset is estimated at $40 billion (about 58.8 trillion won), she has returned a significant share of her overall asset to society."
Scott is regarded as a global philanthropist. In particular, after her divorce from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, she became a symbol of a new form of philanthropy with "large, unrestricted gifts."
Scott's main donations are reported to go to organizations working for racial justice. Even when giving large sums, she does not restrict how the money is used, allowing organizations to deploy funds autonomously.
She said, "The donation aggregates are likely to be reported in the news," adding, "But any scale is only a very small part compared with the care people showed one another within communities this year."
