An earthquake estimated at magnitude 6.4 struck off Aomori Prefecture, Japan. It appears to be an aftershock of the magnitude 7.5 earthquake that occurred the previous night.
On the 9th, the Japan Meteorological Agency said an earthquake estimated at magnitude 6.4 occurred at about 6:52 a.m. off the northeastern Honshu prefecture of Aomori. The focus depth was about 10 kilometers, and there is no tsunami warning in effect.
Shaking with seismic intensity 4 was detected in parts of Aomori Prefecture and Iwate Prefecture from this earthquake. At this level, most people are startled and ceiling-hung lights sway markedly.
Seismic intensity is a Japan Meteorological Agency earthquake scale and, unlike magnitude, which indicates absolute strength, is a relative concept that quantifies how people feel and how nearby objects shake.
Aftershocks have continued off Aomori Prefecture following the strong quake the previous night. According to the Korea meteorological Administration, an aftershock of magnitude 5.0 also occurred in the same section at about 7:07 a.m. that day.
However, the tsunami advisories that had been issued for parts of Hokkaido and northeastern Honshu have all been lifted.
