A former top police official will be dispatched as ambassador to Cambodia, where various crimes are occurring, including large-scale online scams involving Koreans.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on the 28th that former Korean National Police Agency Commissioner Kim Chang-ryong has been appointed ambassador to Cambodia.
Kim, a former Commissioner, graduated from the Korea National Police University and served as head of the Eunpyeong Police Station in Seoul, head of the Women and Youth Division at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, and director of the Public Safety Bureau at the Korean National Police Agency. He also has experience at overseas missions, having served as consul in São Paulo and counselor and consul in the United States.
A heavyweight figure from the police ranks has been appointed ambassador to Cambodia. This appears to be a step to boost exchanges and cooperation between the investigative authorities of both countries, including the establishment in Cambodia of a "Korea task force."
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also appointed Ambassador Jeong Yeon-doo to Türkiye as head of the Foreign Strategy and Intelligence Office, a Vice Minister-level post that serves as chief representative for negotiations on North Korea's nuclear program. A 25th class graduate of the foreign service exam, Jeong previously served as director of the North Korea Nuclear Policy Division and head of the North Korea Nuclear Diplomacy Planning Team.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also carried out Deputy Minister-level appointments that day. Park Il, former ambassador to Lebanon, was named Spokesperson; Lim Sang-woo, minister at the embassy in India, was appointed ambassador for public diplomacy; Park Jong-han, director-general for development cooperation, was appointed coordinator for economic diplomacy; and Kyeon Jong-ho, consul general in Vancouver, was named ambassador for climate change.
