Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said on the 1st that she and President Lee Jae-myung agreed to develop Japan-Korea relations in a future-oriented and stable manner.
Takaichi made the remarks at a press conference after the closing of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang.
Takaichi also said, "With President Lee, we shared the view on the importance of Japan-Korea relations and Japan, Korea and the United States trilateral cooperation under the current strategic environment," adding, "Including the resumption of shuttle diplomacy, the governments of Japan and Korea agreed to continue close communication."
Regarding her first summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, she said they confirmed the broad direction of Japan-China relations as the comprehensive promotion of a strategic, mutually beneficial relationship and the building of a constructive and stable relationship.
She added, "Because differences of opinion exist between Japan and China, frank dialogue at the leaders' level is all the more important," and said, "I want this meeting to serve as an opportunity for both countries to move forward together in solving issues and cooperating."
On her meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, she said, "We put into practice FOIP, Japan's basic diplomatic policy, and elevated the Japan-U.S. alliance to a higher level," adding, "The biggest achievement was building trust with leaders of various countries, including President Trump."
Takaichi also said, "This leaders' declaration reflects many items that Japan places importance on," adding, "I see it as a result of many countries sharing and supporting Japan's position."
She also said, "This round of diplomacy was a valuable opportunity to have meaningful conversations with responsible leaders in the region," adding, "In particular, frankly exchange of views with the important neighbors China and Korea laid the groundwork to advance summit diplomacy going forward."
Meanwhile, in 2031, Japan is set to serve as the APEC chair. On this, Takaichi said, "We will move ahead in earnest with preparations to host," and she is scheduled to return to Japan tonight.
