Gyeran-ppang, one of Korea's representative winter street snacks, made CNN's "50 best breads in the world."
Oct. 18 (local time), CNN introduced the snack using the Korean pronunciation "Gyeran-ppang," saying, "Each piece of gyeran-ppang contains a hidden treasure. A whole baked egg sits inside a bite-size wheat-flour bread."
CNN said, "Gyeran-ppang is a popular snack on the streets of Seoul," adding, "It is served hot for breakfast or enjoyed any time of day."
It added, "Ham, cheese, and chopped parsley lend extra umami to the sweet-and-salty flavor," calling it "a snack that keeps Koreans well-fed through the long winter."
In Japan, "kare-pan," a curry-filled croquette bread, was selected; in China, "shaobing," a tandoor-baked bread stuffed with Sichuan chili, meat, and vegetables, was named. France was represented by the baguette, Montreal in Canada by the bagel, and the United States by biscuits.
CNN did not rank the 50 breads, instead listing the countries they represent in alphabetical order.
