U.S. President Donald Trump said on Oct. 17 (local time), "What the European Union (EU), Japan, and Korea should do is treat our country (the United States) fairly," adding, "That 'fairly' means hundreds of billions, even trillion-level dollars flowing into the United States."
Trump made the comments at the White House while answering reporters' questions about U.S.-China trade talks during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Trump said, "What you need to know is that we have gotten nothing from China," adding, "It was one-way for decades, and they became wealthy thanks to the United States."
He added, "We are no longer foolish." He continued, "That includes the European Union (EU), and it includes Japan and Korea. What our country wants from these countries is to be treated fairly."
Trump went on, "That 'fairly' means hundreds of billions, even trillion-level dollars flowing into the United States," adding, "Our national security is solid thanks to tariffs."
Trump also said, "Starting Nov. 1, if I want, I can impose an additional 100% tariff on top of what we are collecting now," adding, "Then that (tariff on China) would be about 157%, and China does not want that."
Earlier, Trump said that if China maintains its export controls on rare earths, the United States would impose an additional 100% tariff on Chinese products entering the country starting Nov. 1.
