Local media reported that Cambodian prosecutors investigating the torture and killing of a Korean college student in their 20s indicted three Chinese nationals on charges including murder.
According to the state-run AKP news agency on the 11th (local time), the Kampot Provincial Prosecutor's Office in Cambodia the previous day arrested and indicted three Chinese nationals and their accomplices on charges of murder, assault, and online fraud.
According to local prosecutors, a Korean college student, a person surnamed Park, was found inside a black Ford F-150 Raptor at around 2 a.m. on Aug. 8 in the village of North Kampong Bay in Sangkat Kampong Bay, the capital city of Kampot. Two Chinese suspects at the scene were arrested immediately.
Police investigations and a preliminary autopsy found that Park died from severe torture, with multiple severe bruises and wounds across the body.
Police raided a villa in Bokor City, Kampot Province, suspected to be the crime scene, confirmed indications of an illegal online job scam at the site, and arrested one more Chinese suspect.
The three suspects are being held in pretrial detention at Kampot Provincial Prison.
Meanwhile, the Cambodian Interior Ministry said in a press release that afternoon that it had not received any official report or information from the victim's family or the Korean Embassy so far.
AKP reported that this contrasts with a South China Morning Post (SCMP) report that the bereaved family sought help through the embassy and local police.
The Interior Ministry also said that Cambodian authorities are working closely with the Korean Embassy in Cambodia and are proceeding with the necessary procedures. It also said they are tracking other accomplices on the run to carry out justice.
