Russia launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine using drones and missiles. It is seen as one of Russia's biggest air raids since the full-scale war broke out in Feb. 2022.
On the 28th (local time), Russia carried out attacks on Ukraine in the early hours, leaving at least three people dead, including a 12-year-old girl. According to Ukrainian authorities, at least nine people were injured, and air-raid alerts were issued across Ukraine, including Kyiv.
According to foreign media, drones flew over Kyiv overnight and gunfire rang out.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said, "Kyiv is under a large-scale attack," urging residents to stay in shelters. Ivan Fedorov, governor of southeastern Zaporizhzhia Oblast, also said at least four people were injured in Russia's airstrikes.
In response to the attack, neighboring Poland closed the airspace near the cities of Lublin and Rzeszow close to the Ukrainian border and scrambled air force fighters. It was also reported to have gone on high alert through a surface-to-air air defense system.
This month, tensions rose in Europe after Russia repeatedly violated the airspace of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member states.
The Polish military said on X (formerly Twitter), "In connection with activities by the Russian Federation's long-range air force to attack Ukrainian territory, Polish and allied aircraft have begun operations in our airspace," adding, "These measures are preventive."
