U.S. President Donald Trump, in his first United Nations General Assembly address since the launch of his second term, emphasized that he ended seven wars around the world in seven months and sharply criticized the U.N. for failing to do its job.
In his address to the General Assembly at U.N. headquarters in New York on the 23rd (local time), President Trump said, "I did what no president or prime minister has done. In just seven months, I ended seven wars," adding, "But the U.N. offered no help. It is regrettable that I had to do what the U.N. should have done."
He also said, "The U.N. has tremendous potential but is not tapping it at all," noting, "In practice, all it does is send strongly worded letters, with no follow-up," and pointing out, "Empty words cannot resolve wars. Action must follow."
This speech marked Trump's first time at the U.N. General Assembly podium since he won reelection in January. He repeatedly jabbed at the organization's incompetence as an international body, saying he questioned "what the U.N.'s purpose for existing is."
