U.S. President Donald Trump agreed to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping. The two leaders are expected to meet at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit to be held in Korea. The APEC summit is scheduled to take place in Gyeongju, Korea, from Oct. 31 to Nov. 1.
On the 19th, President Trump said on his social media (SNS) Truth Social, "We agreed to meet President Xi at the APEC summit to be held in Korea, I will visit China early next year, and President Xi will also visit the United States at an appropriate time."
He said, "We made progress on several very important issues, including trade, fentanyl, the need to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, and approval of TikTok." He also noted, "The phone call was very good and we will speak again," adding, "I look forward to talks at the APEC summit."
Xi also reacted positively to the call that day. According to China's state-run Xinhua News Agency, Xi said after the call, "It was a positive and constructive dialogue." However, he said, "The United States should avoid unilateral trade restrictions."
Xi also said, regarding the sale of TikTok's U.S. business, "China's position of respecting the will of corporations is clear," and "We urge a fair and non-discriminatory environment for Chinese corporations in the United States."
Accordingly, the APEC summit is expected to become a diplomatic event drawing global attention.
Meanwhile, the call came after high-level U.S.-China trade talks held in Madrid, Spain, on the 14th to 15th. It is understood that the two leaders have reached a basic agreement on a plan for a U.S. corporations to acquire a majority equity stake in TikTok.
Separately, there is speculation that Xi's visit to the United States will be timed to the G20 Leaders Summit on Finanical Markets and the World Economy to be held at President Trump's resort in Florida next year. Also, in relation to Trump saying in the phone call that day, "Thank you for the approval of TikTok," some analyze that an agreement has been reached on the sale of TikTok.
