The White House said regarding Russia's large-scale attack on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, that "it seems neither side (Russia and Ukraine) is ready to end the war."
On the 28th (local time), White House Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said during a briefing, "I told President Trump about this (Russia's attack on Ukraine), and while he was not happy about the news, he was not surprised."
Leavitt noted, "The killing will continue as long as the war continues, and this is why President Trump hopes for an end to the war," adding that "the leaders of both countries also need to desire peace and wish for the war to end."
She added, "It seems there will be additional remarks from the president regarding this issue soon."
According to Ukrainian authorities, Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone attack on Kyiv overnight, resulting in the deaths of at least 17 people, including 4 children, and injuring 48 others.
Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed the outlook that "a meeting between Presidents Zelensky and Putin seems unlikely" on the same day.
