U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that hedge fund lend George Soros, who has played the role of a major supporter for the opposition Democratic Party, should be punished for allegedly supporting violent protests.
On the 27th (local time), President Trump stated through his social media platform Truth Social, "George Soros and his wonderful radical left son should be charged under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act for supporting violent protests," adding, "I will not allow the crazies to divide America any longer."
He further claimed, "Soros and his psychopathic group have caused enormous harm to our country," and warned, "Watch out. We are watching you." However, President Trump did not specify what protests Soros allegedly supported.
There have been claims that the Soros family has supported the Democratic Party for a long time and has backed 'anti-Trump protests' through nonprofit foundations. However, this has not been proven as a specific fact.
This is not the first time President Trump has shown hostility toward Soros. During his first term, he fueled conspiracy theories that Soros was assisting the influx of illegal immigrants from Central America into the United States.
However, Soros dismissed President Trump's claims as absurd and untrue.
On the same day, the Open Society Foundations, a nonprofit organization founded by Soros, stated in a spokesperson's statement, "The claim of supporting violent protests is an absurd lie," and asserted, "The Open Society Foundations does not support or fund violent protests."
