The Donald Trump administration is pushing for a large-scale immigration crackdown and has set extraordinary conditions for securing personnel for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on the 17th (local time), the Department of Homeland Security is recruiting personnel with extraordinary salary and bonus conditions to hire agents for arrests and deportations of illegal immigrants.
The degree requirement has been eliminated, and new positions for individuals over 40 years old have been established to allow for the reemployment of retirees. Salaries range from $50,000 to $144,000 (approximately 70 million to 200 million won), which is higher than that of new police officers in major cities.
Recruitment was conducted through promotions on social media. The Department of Homeland Security encouraged accompanying applications with phrases like, 'a chance for father-son bonding' and 'deport illegal immigrants with friends.'
Posters featuring the character 'Uncle Sam,' a middle-aged white male in a hat and jacket designed with the American flag, included phrases such as 'America needs you,' 'Join ICE,' and 'Let's protect our country.'
Minister Kristi Noem stated, 'More than 110,000 people have applied for this recruitment.'
The Trump administration is investing more than $150 billion in immigration enforcement and is carrying out the largest deportation operation in U.S. history, having deported 144,000 individuals by the end of June. This is an increase compared to the same period during the Biden administration (136,854 individuals).
